I've been thinking a lot about home
lately. What makes a good home? Why do we look
forward to coming home? Why is making a home so
important to us? I've been musing on this for
no special reason. We're not looking for a new
place to live. We're not moving any time soon.
Like so many of us, I'm crazy about
the home improvement shows on TV. I'm inspired,
too, by the beautiful looks created in home and
decorating magazines. Still, I've been wondering
more about what makes a house a HOME, and about
the kind of home I want to create for our sons
as they grow up. I want to make a home they love
returning to, a place where they feel safe, the
kind of home they will aspire to create with THEIR
families one day. That's a nice thought.
A little while back I was looking
through a book on quilts made deep in the American
south, the quilts of Gee's Bend. Most of the quilt
makers were living in the harshest poverty --
literally living in log cabins and making log
cabin quilts. Looking at these photos of Depression-era
farm workers as they stood in front of their dusty
shacks, I wondered what I had in common with them.
And then I realized that they looked just as proud
as I do when I stand in front of our home.
So ... what is home? I think it's a place where
we gather, connect with one another and let down our troubles.
It's a place where we can laugh, tell stories, be with our favourite
people, enjoy some good food and a good night's rest. Yes.
